Thomas teaches courses on geographic information systems (GIS), land use planning, physical planning, urban design and urban sustainability. His research centers on sustainable and resilient urban development with a focus on scenario planning techniques and innovative planning technologies. For his dissertation research, he explored how scenario-based planning methods might be used to help improve community resilience through the use of green infrastructure such as parkland, open space, and other natural features.
