Abstract
This presentation and discussion will interrogate whether or not two complementary theories of human need-- the Basic Psychological Need Theory within self-determination theory (SDT) and the Doyal/Gough theory of human need (THN)—can inform social work practice, research and advocacy, and help fulfill our ethical obligation to address human needs. There will be presentation and critical discussion enduring understanding of the following:
History and Evolution of Theories of Human Need Including Maslow, Gil, Etc.
Theories of Human Need and Remaining Conceptual Problems
Practice Application of SDT & Theories of Empowerment, Roles, Ecosystems, Human Injustice
Relevance for Evaluation of Practice Outcomes
Relevance to Education, Social Research, and Social Policy Advocacy
Relevance for Social Work and Professional Ethics
Program Rationale: To facilitate this, the discussion will present a chart which can be used to inform needs assessment at the micro, mezzo and macro levels. Approaches will also be presented and discussed for implementing primary (upstream) prevention that prevents systemic opportunity inequality; secondary (midstream) prevention which makes provision for resources when opportunities are scarce, or barriers exist; and tertiary (downstream) intervention which intervenes to prevent serious harm for those experiencing unmet basic human needs. Participants learn and discuss practice that is informed by a needs-based understanding of human injustice (oppression, exploitation and mechanistic dehumanization), which without adequate preventive policies and services produces wrongfully unmet human need. Such practice can inform social and political action to dismantle human injustice.
Five Questions:
1. How are THN and SDT compatible or incompatible with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
2. How are THN and SDT complementary with each other?
3. Why should human needs, human rights and social justice (human liberation) be discussed together?
4. How can contemporary needs theory inform practice in social work and the helping professions?
5. How can contemporary needs theory inform social research, social policy advocacy and social and political action?
