Abstract
The author uses history, geography, sociology, and political science to describe and explain the dramatic changes that French colonial rule made in the Islamic legal culture. The mass of data the author has assembled will daunt readers as they travel, chapter by chapter, through this work of history and sociology. Some of it is, frankly, tough slogging, but most of it carries the reader, stage by stage, through this complex story. This is a book for the specialist and will remain a classic exposition of the Islamic legal structure in Algeria for decades.
