Abstract
A content analysis of articles from Newsweek and the State Department Bulletin to determine the extent to which these sources defined African violence in East-West terms during "cold war" and "détente" periods produced unexpected findings. Such references were more frequent during the period of U.S.-Soviet cooperation than they were during the period of conflict, and they were more common in Newsweek than in the Bulletin.
