Abstract
Dover, M. A. (2002). Linking education and practice: The need for an annual national social work conference. ACOSA Update: Building Community and administrative practice in the 21st Century, 16(2), 3.
A major concern for social work is how we link professional education and practice. This is done in several
ways: field education, practice courses, continuing education, publications, and professional organization conferences. But in recent years, fewer full-time faculty members do field work advising. Practice courses flourish, but there are fewer integrative seminars. Agencies are cutting back on continuing education and field
instruction. Publications proliferate, but agency and university support for conference attendance is inadequate. This works to favor those with the means to attend and works against diversity. These trends
also work against more fully linking education and practice.
